We recently completed the bronze conservation portion of the Winnetka Cenotaph Monument. Slideshow presentations of our work can be seen by clicking the projects tab, below. | ![]() |
I asked sculptor Fred Borcherdt a few questions regarding his outdoor, painted steel sculptures. He reveals his artistic intent during an interview we have posted on our ARTICLES section here... |

Outdoor sculpture is susceptible to changing and potentially damaging outdoor environments. I design practical conservation programs of aesthetic integrity and lasting performance that preserve artistic properties. My services range from restoration of historic bronze sculpture to the recreation of damaged and compromised artistic intents of outdoor sculptors. I hold authenticity in materials, sustainablity, and maintainability of treatments to be paramount. If you have a project concerning outdoor art issues, I am happy to give a free consultation. Latest project: Winnetka, IL Cenotaph: Bronze Treatment Objects: Bronze: flagpole base, eagle pole cap ornament (gilded), 2 eagle ornaments, 4 plaques, 10 stars (gold plate) We dismantled the base, plaques were removed from their anchors, the 700 lb. eagle cap ornament was craned down to ground level. We preformed several treatments as the metals conservation firm during this restoration for the Village of Winnetka, IL. 2000 pounds of bronze decorative element was dismantled and removed from the monument. Our various treatments have brought this monument back to glory, such as a newly gilded Eagle ornament which has been placed back upon its 65 foot flagpole base, and 10 gold plated stars adorning the street side face of marble. Wax coating was applied to the accessible plaques and ornament, as a protective coating which is easily restored during routine maintenance. |

Gabriel Harrison did all of the metal conservation work [at the Winnetka Cenotaph Monument] and a magnificent job making sure the final outcome was just as it was in 1927. I know that he gave his heart and soul to this project and I certainly appreciate it. Sincerely, Phil Hoza, Winnetka Resident
"Great job cleaning our sculpture! I wanted you to know what a great job Gabriel did, cleaning our sculpture here at Legler Branch Library. It looks shiny and new! (This is the piece by Elizabeth Catlett, that is over the circulation desk.) Not only did Gabriel do a good job, but he was easy to work with, a good communicator, and unobtrusive. Fantastic!" "We also had an interesting conversation about the amazing work he does cleaning the bird sculpture at Midway Airport." Sincerely, Kenneth R. Jones
“I have had the privilege of working with Gabriel Harrison during his supervision of a major conservation project on City Hall Tower in Philadelphia 2005-06… Mr. Harrison worked with and supervised a crew of technicians and conservators, developed scheduling and interfaced with City officials, a panel reviewing his progress regularly…It was a pleasure to deal with his upbeat attention to detail and execution at the best professional level.”
“I consider Mr. Harrison an expert in the field of conservation and I give him my highest recommendation. I continue to call upon his expertise in my current position with the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Program.” Yvonne Wise |

Determining the most appropriate treatment for outdoor metals includes selection of optimal coating systems.
We offer long lasting hot wax coatings, which can be maintained regularly at low cost. For less accessible metalwork, Acrylic lacquer coatings are used. Acrylic coatings are very long lasting and require less maintenance. Well maintained coatings keep bronze sculptures looking their best!
The challenge of preserving artworks is non-stop in an outdoor environment. Regular treatment by a conservator can reduce the damage of the harsh outdoor environment.
A custom maintenance program is the best way to care for outdoor sculpture for the long term. Cyclic maintenance can save sculpture owners the great cost of major restoration in the future, by preserving sculptures as they are today.
